ARTIST STATEMENT

I currently work on digital medium. My art is heavily influenced by symbolism, based on inner thoughts and feelings that come from experiences and the subconscious. They are little stories that I tell using creatures or feminine figures, combined with repetitive elements and symbols, creating a language of my own. I see my work as a reflection of myself and my aim to gain self-awareness. There is a lot I take inspiration from: nature, music, inner thoughts, experiences… anything that affects me and I can make mine. That diversity of inspiration leads me to always trying to stay open to new ways of representing a subject on the screen. I combine chromatic reduction with a deliberate composition and the symbolism and details are always thought out to tell a story or to have a specific meaning.

The language I am developing right now has me wanting to explore more and more, to grow more. I pay a lot of attention to composition and use of color (even if scarce), and I always do my best to convey my ideas in a way that feels right or truthful. This means that my creative process might go through several changes, and having the layer feature makes it all the easier for me to play with composition, element placements and color, so the digital medium is very convenient for that matter. It’s also very forgiving if you let artwork simmer before considering it “finished”, as there’s always last minute detail changing. My work grows with me.

BIOGRAPHY

Shakti Gómez was born and raised in the Basque Country, in the Northern area of Biscay. She studied Fine Arts in UPV Leioa, and she obtained a Masters Degree in education. After several years dedicated to teaching, she moved to Japan and

switched to freelance working as a character designer and illustrator in 2017, using digital tools. Keeping her freelance jobs, she moved back to the Basque Country in 2018. During 2020, she took a course with Spanish artist Claudia Sahuquillo to strengthen her artistic skills, and soon after she fed an inner need for a freeing, more analogue expression, and started experimenting with abstraction. She took a mentorship with artist Ty Clark, and she painted several pieces under that style, still working on digital illustrations at the same time. After that, she started creating her own work, using symbolism as a main way of communicating. She started to research blockchain technology and how it could be applied to art, and started minting her first illustrations in June 2022. By the time she sold out her very first collection, she had found a stride with her art, and decided to keep going in that direction. Nowadays she keeps creating and minting her work, applying to several galleries and showcases. One of her pieces, “Nostalgic Escape”, will be displayed at Artists Village at NFT NYC 2023.
