ARTIST STATEMENT

As an artist I am wanting to create objects and images that hold the ordinariness of life alongside the extraordinary and ungraspable nature of it all.

Making art is for me a process of coming into a fuller relationship with experience - with just what is - based around a figure, an object, a place, a moment, a memory. I explore both abstract and figurative art, and generally use oils and acrylics along with more down-to-earth materials such as charcoal powder, metal and found objects. The creative process involves reflection, research, meditation and open, unstructured time. I love the interplay between doing art and allowing art to do itself, between conscious choice in the creative process and surrender to it’s open, expansive dimension. It is here that art finds meaning.

My hope is that in contemplating the paintings others will touch a place of deep authenticity - within the work and within themselves.

BIOGRAPHY

Moksananda is a British artist living in Spain, where he has lived for 35 years.
He is largely self-taught, though he studied drawing with Gaia Art Academy in Valencia and painting with Barry John Raybould at the Virtual Art Academy. He also studied film making with New York based Lights Film School.
In 1985 he was ordained into a Buddhist Order and later founded the Valencia Buddhist Centre. For over 30 years he worked and travelled extensively in the hispanic world, teaching and supporting others on the Buddhist path while deepening his own practice and understanding.
Dedicated now full-time to painting and image making, his life as a meditator and practising Buddhist feed into his work. His work has been selected for juried group shows and featured in magazines, on webpages and used on book covers.
His paintings are held in a growing number of private collections worldwide - Spain, Mexico, the UK, Cyprus, Holland, Austria and Australia.
He currently lives with his wife and daughter near Valencia, where he has his studio.
